Mims is an artist, abolitionist, and facilitator from Jacksonville, Florida based in Los Angeles, CA. She has trained and performed in many different dance forms for several years. Her work, which spans across the disciplines of fashion, dance, advocacy, facilitation, curation, and direction, is rooted in self and cultural explorations, healing, and shifting culture alongside policy to create sustainable change. She experiences the body as a site of liberation and uses that information as a guide for organizing, facilitation, and all of the art she creates. Mims is a graduate of the University of Southern California where she studied Dance and NGO’s and Social Change. She currently works for Californians United for a Responsible Budget and is a Toulmin Fellow.

Mims will utilize her RBFP residency to research, interview and collect resources for the publication of a coffee table book and creation of an original dance piece, Brianna Mims Suit Project.

The Brianna Mims Suit Project explores and deconstructs the symbolism of suits apropos respectability politics, gender identities, capitalism, patriarchy, professionalism, and the relationship between politics and appearance.  Old suits will be deconstructed and repurposed into new pieces that will be photographed with text written by Brianna Mims that will further unpack the symbolism of suits. The book launch at Wisdome in downtown Los Angeles from November 17-20, 2021, will feature video projections by Gillian Garcia and original choreography by Brianna Mims with dancers wearing the deconstructed suits.
