M.A.M.A.™ is Dumama and blk banaana, a circular sister economy. Exploring the chaos, connection and the (m)otherwordly.

M.A.M.A.™ will explore the intersections between the natural world, embodied memory and the idiosyncratic expressions of our digital intimacy.

This audio-visual exploration contemplates the inevitable fusing of techno and spirit, and imagines how we might collectively preserve our psyches and protect our memories in this process. We ask, how do we facilitate ritual and healing in an artificially intelligent reality?

Honouring the poetics of psycho-spiritual and metaphysical transcendence, the installation will bring together sonic and visual textures that exemplify the infinite intricacies of our present. Bringing together dreams, history and the super natural, the performance also unlocks post-pandemic reflections related to our spiritual connections IRL and URL, creating a sensory installation imagining the separation (and connection) between data and being.

The duo’s performance installation is a transitional, liminal space, layering live, recorded and archival sound textures with live video projection play. They primarily work with an archive they have been building collectively for the past two years, which includes a timeline of personal exchanges (voicenotes, videos, screenshots, etc) and text, images and video material sourced online. With the intention of developing a ‘multidimensional womb-like’ experience, digitally, the duo invites audiences into an intimate creative partnership between the artists, a process they call ‘a circular sister economy’.

Dumama, born Gugulethu Duma creates work that is a contemplation on Black realism, Black utopias, Black concepts in a life full of technicolour and noise. She  is a future folk performing artist, songwriter and cultural researcher working with imaginative resistance as a source for healing. She is currently based between Trondheim Norway & Berlin and is a South African citizen, and a Norwegian resident.

blk banaana [Duduetsang Lamola, b. 1991 in London, UK] is an interdisciplinary artist based in Cape Town, South Africa. Through the use of collage, digital art, moving image and installation, she explores the relationship between fragmentation and speculative reconstruction in order to challenge a hegemonic Western perception of reality that has been mediated through anthropological violence.
